Family Justice Council Publishes Key Guidance on Neurodiversity in the Family Justice System
Today, the Family Justice Council has published essential new guidance for practitioners on neurodiversity within the Family Justice System. This marks a significant turning point and a vital step forward in ensuring equal access to justice for neurodivergent individuals.
The guidance provides crucial information on neurodivergence, alongside best practice recommendations and a clear framework to help practitioners identify and respond effectively to neurodivergent needs. Jenny Beck KC (Hon), who serves as the private law representative on the Family Justice Council, chaired the working group responsible for developing this guidance. She is also a co-founder of FLANC (Family Law Advice for the Neurodivergent Community).
Commenting on its publication, Jenny Beck said:
“At FLANC, we are confident that this best practice guidance will empower practitioners to recognise and respond to neurodivergence within family proceedings, ensuring that barriers to participation are removed and neurodivergent children, adults, and families have equal access to justice.”
The guidance underscores the importance of understanding individual profiles and making often straightforward adjustments to remove obstacles to participation. To support its implementation, Jenny and her FLANC colleagues, including Jasmine Hollis and Flora Hughes, will be offering training sessions for practitioners on applying this best practice guidance in their work.
