Every summer, we run a Vacation Scheme for those looking to enter the world of family law. The Vac Scheme takes place over six weeks and provides an opportunity to engage directly with clients, counsel and the court process.

This year, applications will be open from 9 March to 23 March. To submit your application, please apply with your CV and covering letter by email to contact@beckfitzgerald.co.uk. Applications should address:

  1. How you embody Beck Fitzgerald’s core values of integrity, bravery and kindness.
  2. Whether you have completed or commenced studying for the LPC/SQE. If applicable, the anticipated date for the completion of exams.

We have run the Vac Scheme for seven years, first starting back in 2018. In that time, it had led to a number becoming key members of the Beck Fitzgerald team. Just recently, Anna, Jasnam and Kajol from the 2023 intake qualified as Solicitors.

The 2025 Vac Scheme was another successful group, with four having been offered training contracts. Those from the latest intake had this to say:

How did you find the vacation scheme application process?

Maya: It was a good introduction to get us to write an essay on ourselves and our values because I don’t have a legal background and I could see that they wanted to understand me as a person and not just my knowledge of the law.

What were you expecting from the Vac Scheme before coming in and how does it compare to your actual experience? (actual work and feelings)

Isha: I did not expect to learn as much as I did during the vac scheme. It was real experience, dealing with real clients, and learning practice. We dove straight into work, and it turned out to be the most effective method for us all to learn. We were heavily supported by our supervisors and never felt afraid to ask questions to other trainees in the office. It was a deeply collaborative environment, focused on teaching and client care. Everyone on the team was kind and friendly.

What did you enjoy most and why?

Tom: Choosing one thing is difficult. I enjoyed the sense of community; I enjoyed the ethos and goals of the firm; and I enjoyed the annual sports day, even despite (tragically) injuring myself in the egg and spoon race. But I suppose what I enjoyed most was the trust given to you and the wide variety of work you are exposed to from very early on in the scheme. From going to court to meeting and supporting clients, the faith placed in you by the firm allows you to learn a massive amount very quickly and this was incredibly rewarding.

How would you describe the company culture?

Lily: It is a collaborative environment, and everyone is supported in the work they do. The learning experience of all trainees is a priority, and the culture is friendly, welcoming and focused on the best interests of the clients.

Looking forward in two or three years’ time, what do you think your biggest takeaway from this experience would be?

Maya: It’s such a cliché, but to throw myself into opportunities. I remember being asked if one of us would go to court in Guildford for three days to take a note. It was quite an intimidating prospect, but I put myself forward anyway and I ended up being a really interesting experience and something different to the day to day. So, it’s really taking all the opportunities if they present themselves.

Do get your applications in before 23 March. If you have any questions, please ask contact@beckfitzgerald.co.uk.

We look forward to hearing from you.
